Long Time......No write

I guess it has been a while since I posted anything, and prior to heading out on a long vacation I thought an update is in order.

Following the season I was able to spend alot of time with the family.  Taking the kids to spray parks, outdoor swimming pools, bike rides and just having fun around the house.  I have to admit it was nice to take a break from training to play with the kids.

One day about a month ago I just started weight lifting again and putting in some core workouts around this.  I have also been trying to eat everything in site to supplement the weights and add some size for next year.  Good news is that it is working, I am up about 5-7 lbs since the end of May.  I have been tracking my food intake on a daily basis in order to  ensure I was eating more than enough calories in order to help gain.

Later today I will start the long drive to Phoenix with my daughter.  My in laws have a vacation house there and we get to use it whenever we want.  This year we will be there for the entire month of October.  I am looking forward to the heat (avg 35C) and some cross training.  Mountain biking, swimming are literally in my back yard, plenty of green space for weighted ball throws and turbo jav and a high school track 10 minutes away.  Looking forward to continuing the work I ahve been doing over the past month and comeing home bigger, more relaxed and a nice tan to go along with it.

End of Season

This past weekend was Capital Cities annual Sherwood Park classic. This year the meet also served as Alberta Provincial Championships.  Knowing that this was going to be my last meet of the season I wanted to have a good day and reach a new seasonal best distance.

About 5 days before the meet I was in my garage and threw a backpack into the back of my Xterra and as I twisted I slipped a rib.  No fun for anyone who has done it.  I have done it before so I knew exactly what the issue was, and how bad for throwing it could be.  Luckily it was monday and I have a great chiropractor who I have been seeing for almost 7 years.  Three adjustments throughout the week, some groovy over the counter drugs and I was feeling better.

As our club was hosting the meet, I was required to volunteer some of my time to the event.  I brought my parents along and the three of us spent the day helping to measure various throwing events.  Lot's of fun, but by the time I was in the final few rounds of throwing in my event, I was getting pretty hungary and tired.

I had a great warm up and came out with a seasonal best first throw of 43.5m.  After that things declined with every throw.  43.5 was good enough for second place and a silver medal.

One of my major goals at the beginning of the season was to reach new seasonal bests at every meet.  Out of the 5 events I attended, I obtained seasonal bests in 4 of them.

Another goal was to throw 50m this year.  I did not make it to 50m this year but I know that a full off season of dedicated throw training will get me far beyond the 50m mark next season.  Hopefully even up to 60m so that I can qualify for nationals in Edmonton!!

This year was a great experience and I had such a great time training and competing.  Meeting new peers on the track was also a nice change.  I love my triathlon friends but it was nice to change things up this year.

It is very strange for me to be talking about the end of season in late July.  I will actually get to have some hot summer time off without the pressures of training and dedicating time to workouts.  I am sure the family wont mind either.

A few weeks off before the end of the season

Since my last post and the CALTAF meet things have been pretty busy for me.  After taking a week to myself to work on the ITU World Cup Triathlon in Edmonton I started hitting the gym and had a really great session with Rob at the track that included about 70 throws (mostly to work on form through my final two cross steps).

It has been raining like crazy for the last little while in Edmonton and after the Edmonton international Track classic two major track facilities were torn up to prep for improvements, 2014 nationals and an up coming Pan am games bid (so I have heard).  Needless to say track space has been limited.

I have not talked alot about the elbow pain I was having earlier in the season.  Turns out it is very common in throwers, especially ones with poor form.  Well minimal throwing over the past few weeks have halped so much in giving my arm a break.  This weekend is Alberta Provincial championships and our club is hosting the event.  I am looking forward to a new seasonal best distance and having some close family and friends onsite to watch.

I occassionally follow an australian blog and came accross a great quote that really sat with me:

"It’s amazing as people how we try and talk ourselves out of doing things that we know we want to. It’s self sabotage of a the highest order. If we somehow convince ourselves that something is too hard or too much of a risk, we find it easier to avoid challenging ourselves. The sad truth is that subconsciously we would rather avoid the challenge of achieving something than risking failure in our attempt. Fear inhibits what we achieve in life and I could feel the battle in the my head begin."

It would have been easy for me to remain with triathlon.  I would have had success but would I have been happy and excited about what I was doing?  It is scary to change your athletic way of thinking after 11 years.  Taking the challenge and stepping off that ledge was definately worth it and I dont regret it for a second.

CALTAF, progress as the season goes on

This past weekend I headed south once again to Calgary for another meet at the Foothills athletic Park.  This was scheduled to be one of the bigger meets for me this year.  At the start of the season I was hoping that I could win this event and gain entry into the Edmonton International Track Classic.  Little did I know that there would be some heavy hitters at the meet this year compared to last.

Last year, the winner of the event threw 48m.  This year that would have gotten him 6th place.  Like I said there were some heavy hitters this year.  Pearsonally for me it was a good progressive day.  2 of the 3 meets this year I have achieved seasonal best throws.  This weekend I threw 3/6 throws as seasonal bests.  My final throw was 3m further than my previous mark set a month ago in Calgary.

This was the goal this year was to continually improve and increase my distance at every competition.  I think this goal has been achieved to this point.  Continual improvement over this year is a huge positive point for me as I move into a more specific off season training plan.  There are still a couple of meets in July that I plan to attend including our club meet which is also acting as Provincial Championships.  A month of practise and training will hopefully get me closer to the goal of 50m this year

Competition update

After a good practice session with Fish on May 8, I headed back to Calgary for a meet on May 11.  This time the family came with me to cheer me on.  After a 25 minute stop on the side of the road to feed baby Henry, I arrived at the track a tad bit later than I would have liked.

I was able to get in a fast warm up and get ready to throw.  Along side me warming up was Kyle Nielsen.  The last two years Kyle has finished second at senior Nationals and last year was only beaten by Olympian Curtis Moss.  Needless to say it was pretty impressive watching Kyle throw 70m+ in warm up.  A sign of things to come was all I could think.

As I said in my last post the goal for the season was to set a new seasonal best throw at every meet.  last week was 38.4m, this week was 40.7m. definatly an improvement.  Good thing for that throw because the other 5 I had on the day were unimpressive, including two fouls.  More good news was that Fish was onsite watching me and providing feedback after every throw and was able to come to our next practice with some specifics to work on.

I don't compete again until a small meet in Edmonton on June 2nd, so I have lot's of practice time to work on  footwork and release technique so that I can set a new seasonal best mark.

First competition......more baby steps

May 4 I left my young family sleeping at home and drove 2.5 hours to Calgary for a 45 minute competition.  We were given 4 throws for the full competition as there were only 6 in my category.  One thing that I had really been working on was my foot work and timing.  Glad to say I had 4 successful throws with no fouls.  As my results started to come in I had to remind myself that this is the first competition and that this is just the start.  By the end of the day i was 3rd and threw 38.4m, not great I know and not even halfway to Canadian Olympic standard.  I was a little disappointed as I drove the 2.5 hours back home to Edmonton, but it did give me a lot of time to reflect.  The one key thing I took away was that this was just the first meet and that the goal moving forward was to achieve a new seasonal best throw at every meet.

We'll see how that goes as the season progresses.  Next weekend I am back in Calgary again for another meet.

New favorite little man

Ok I know that this is a blog about my training but I can't leave out a post about my new favorite little man.  My son Henry James was born on April 24th.  A very healthy and hungry 8lb boy is keeping us very busy.  I love having a son and knowing that our family name will pass on to another generation.

Baby Steps lead to big throws

As the week comes to a close I reflect back on a week that included 3 throwing workouts.....OUTSIDE!!!!!

The majority of snow is gone from the fields and I was out at Strathcona Athletic Park this week with Fish (Rob Fisher).  I have fully transitioned from Ron to Fish for my coaching and was blown away with the depth and detail Fish has put into my program.  Especially when dealing with my work schedule.

My first day at the track (Tuesday) was very humbling.  Thankfully Fish was there with me to guide me on the proper path.  A lot of direct feedback is what I need to progress every time I throw.  Tuesday's workout was somewhat disappointing as there are a lot of holes in my approach and throw.  I think part of the frustration was knowing that Ron was training me as a sprinter and not a thrower.  I am in great shape but just not great throwing shape.  I think that if my program had been different since October things would be different this spring.

Thursday's workout was much different.  The feedback Fish gave me on Tuesday and throughout Thursdays workout I was able to make significant improvements.  4 step approaches with crappy High School javelins and a strong X-wind while still throwing a decent distance put my mind in a good spot moving forward.

Lots of throwing means a couple of things.  Happy Athlete, sore body.  New movements, stretches and lot's of throwing means sore legs and shoulder.  Good thing Fish has icing, chiro, massage and stretching worked into my training plan.

Looking forward to the upcoming week, although with new baby arriving anytime training will be obviously take a back seat for a while.  Of course, baby means 23 days off work for me starting Wednesday morning!!!!

3 Weeks to go

It is 330am I am working as usual and I just finished a great 60min med ball workout.  After the workout a thought popped into my head.  It is April 14 and I have my first track meet on May 05.  For those of you counting that is 3 weeks from today.  Normally this would not be such a big deal, except for several restrictions.

1: The entire province of Alberta has been under a snowfall warning for the past 2 days.  Edmonton was not hit so bad (maybe 5cm) but Calgary is supposed to get 15-20cm.

2: I have not had an outdoor practice at this point

3: While transitioning between coaches within our club, I have not received a training schedule.

4: See #1

I am in great shape and feeling very strong but am getting a little worried about the start of the outdoor track season.  I can be as strong as I want to be but if I cannot practice technique and actually throw a javelin I am not sure how things are going to go 3 weeks from now.

The outdoor season is not very long in Alberta and I only have a limited amount of time this year.  Gotta make every day count.  Every day off is a day farther away from Rio

Back At It!!!

My last post was talking about the great time in Banff and my 'lazy' week of training.  I am happy to say that I have been back on track over the last couple of weeks.  Even working Monday-Thursday this week I have been able to get 3 hard quality workouts in plus a few other active recovery workouts.  My body feeling sore tells me that I have indeed been pushing hard.

The snow has been melting like crazy here over the last 10 days and my front lawn is almost completely clear.  Time to get ready to start throwing...........not quite.  As we speak I look out the window of my office I can see the snow that has been accumulating in the parking lot for the past 4 hours.  Edmonton is expecting to get 5-15cm of snow over the next 24 hours.  Guess the hopes of throwing outside are on hold for a while.  By the end of next week the temperature is supposed to be back around 7-9C so my fingers are crossed.

Productive Lazy week

Just bare with me I will explain.

This week started off great.  Three quality workouts in two days including a great circuit workout with Fish (Rob Fisher) and the other Capital City throwers.  Feeling good and excited about possibly having a big week.  However, this week was also my wife's birthday and I had planned an overnight trip to Banff to celebrate and get out of the city with the family.  Banff was awesome and the weather was perfect.  Coming home to a huge snowstorm and a 100 car pile up on the highway meant that our 3.75 hour drive home took 6 hours.  Leaving us bagged and tired when we pulled into the garage just in time to get to bed for work the next morning.  Usually on this set of shifts I can get in 4 solid workouts during the day.  This week was different, lot's of work training and busy days meant no workouts at work all weekend.  Feeling very sluggish I know that I need a couple good workouts to get me back in gear....monday is almost here and the start of a new training week.

I guess I was not so much lazy as buzy but you get what I am talking about.

As for productive.....While at practice on Tuesday I was able to finalize my event schedule for the spring and summer.  First meet is in Calgary May 5th and then back in Calgary for May 11th.  A total of 6 track meets with the potential for 2 others if I can get my act together and throw well.  Of course for that to happen the 5 feet of snow on my front lawn needs to melt first so I can start throwing.  Having a competition schedule for the season is a huge deal for me to work towards especially realizing that the first meet is only 6 weeks away!!!!

Spikes and Snow

First the good news.  New Spikes arrived last week!!!!!

I am very excited to finally have spikes to train in, now if I could only get outside and throw!!!  Spring in Edmonton means a lot of different things and one of them is the possibility of snow.  The last 2 days we have had a dump of close to 20cm.  Prior to this dump we could actually see grass on our front lawn and my daughter Sydney had a world of fun splashing in puddles of melted ice.  More snow just means a longer wait until I can actually start throwing.  This is a big deal since the season is coming up fast.  There is a big throws gala in Lethbridge in 8 weeks and I am stuck inside throwing weighted balls against a wall.  No fun at all but like everything this season I must be patient.

Training Update
The excitement of training is still very much alive within me.  I do not train because I have to, I train because I want to.  Training has definitely been increasing.  Total hours and total number of workouts are increasing from my early season numbers and I am definitely noticing a change in fitness from 4-6 months ago.  Now if I can only get outside and see what all my hard work this winter has gotten me.  I am meeting with Rob on Tuesday to discuss spring training and the competition season ahead.  I am excited to get a lot of throwing in and attending many competitions throughout Alberta.

ITU 2014 Grand Final awarded to Edmonton!!

Yesterday was a big day for Triathlon in Canada.  The ITU (International Triathlon Union) announced yesterday that Edmonton will be the host for the 2014 Grand Final.  As exciting as this is for the triathlon community in Edmonton, the announcement was expected.  San Diego dropped out several months ago and the ITU came to the Edmonton organizing committee and practically said, if you bid you will win.  Still, great exposure for Triathlon in Edmonton and Canada.

As exciting as this news is, I am very much at ease knowing that I will not be attending as a participant.  Every time something like this comes along and has little to no impact on my decision to leave the sport and pursue my Olympic Dream I feel more and more confident that I have made the right decision.

I have spent my time competing in triathlons around the world with the maple leaf on my chest and I have been so incredibly proud to do it.  I cant wait to represent my country again on an international stage........but it won't be in triathlon.

4 months into my Javelin training I am still looking for excuses to train more and make myself better, stronger and faster.  I check my email multiple times on Mondays just waiting to see what my training schedule looks like for the week.  Everything is still exciting and it makes training that much more fun.  Triathlon just was not doing that for me anymore and I am so thankful that I was able to recognize this and not push myself through a disappointing season.  I think that by pulling myself out of the sport before it got to that point I am far more likely to return at some point in my future.

Congrats to the Edmonton Triathlon Academy and organizing committee on the successful World Championship bid.

Still going strong

Wow I am a lazy blogger, I dont even want to look at the date of my last post but I am going to guess close to 2 months.  I will blame Christmas, Work, and my Birthday.  yeah.....that sounds good.  But now most of that is over and as for work I am stuck here for the night.

The holiday season is always hard on training, lot's of food, sweets, treats, chocolate, and time with friends and family.  Not that there is anything wrong with that, I loved every minute of the holiday season.  especially the family and friends part.  Long after Rio, they will be the ones left by my side, plus spending time with them helps me stay grounded and relaxed.

Training over the last 2 months has been really good. i did not get to the track for almost a month straight because of one thing or another.  As a result my speed work is a bit off, but my strength and conditioning has been better than ever before at this point of the year.  When triathlon training, I would not start until January, this year I am in April shape already.  It is kind of a nice feeling actually knowing how far ahead I am in that regard when compared to previous years.

My weight workouts have been occurring at work usually 3-4 days straight while on shift then off for days off.  I have a few different circuit training programs from Ron that I can do at home or anywhere with space.  I am still doing some short spring work on my bike at home (under 1 min sprints) as a recovery workout.  The last 2 weeks I have been able to get back to the track and get some sprints in.  I love being able to take the time and do a proper run workout at the track with the team.  But.......it is super frustrating training there, I figure in a 2 hour workout about 30 minutes is wasted waiting for space, coaches, other athletes, etc.  I miss that about triathlon training, where it was just me and my timeline.  But having the team there does lend alot of support, encouragement and competition.  There is an indoor track meet this weekend, which I will be missing because of night shift but that is ok.  I know the capital City members will be fine without me.

Our throwing coach Rob Fisher (remember that name, you will be hearing it alot in the next 6 months) brought me 700g and 800g throwing balls last week so that I could do some more throwing practise.  Plus my new javelin spikes are on order and will hopefully be here soon!!!!!

2013 is the year of my return to track and field and I cannot wait to see my progress as the outdoor season gets closer and closer.
